The Insterburg is a self-administered student appartment building in Karlsruhe
Although it's impossible to capture the spirit of The Insterburg on a simple website, we've put together a list of some of the things which set us apart from other student accommodation in Karlsruhe.
The Insternet is the computer network which was set up and is now overseen by residents. We are connected to the university and to the internet by a 400 mbit/s radio link. We also own an Inster-printer which enables residents with credit on their printing account to print via the Insternet. A document scanner/copier is also available, and every room has a LAN cable socket and wifi access.
There is a bar on the ground floor which was set up by a local brewery. The bar is open once a week for a “bar evening” and also for other special occassions. In summer you'll find many residents sitting on the adjacent terrace or on the roof, enjoying a barbecue with a view! The bar evenings present the perfect opportunity to come by, introduce yourself and ask any questions you might have. In the communal room in front of the bar we have a foosball table (table soccer), pool table, table tennis table, grand piano and cigarette vending machine.
In the printing room there are six work stations with desks and padded office chairs, which make both individual and group study possible.
The Insterburg owns a number of annual evening swimming passes (valid Monday-Friday 8-10pm for the nearby public swimming pool Fächerbad) and indoor rock climbing passes. These can be borrowed from selected sport tutors or from the Instermat, a key and ticket dispenser built and programmed by residents. Insterburg is also able to use the university's football and beach volleyball facilities.
We have a music room for musicians and bands complete with drum kit, electric piano and several amplifiers. Clicking on the photos to the right will enlarge them.
The Insterburg features a well-equipped workshop, which every resident can use free of charge. The workshop contains almost all the necessary tools for repairing bicycles; drills, circular saws, work benches and much more. Bicycles can be kept in the basement or in the covered bicycle cage in front of the building.
A breath-taking view of Karlsruhe awaits all visitors to our roof terrace. As well as sunbathing in summer, the roof terrace is also ideal for getting together for a barbecue or just spontaneous partying!
